The mission of the Counseling Center is to provide art therapy to SVA students. It will consist of second year MPS Art Therapy students who have demonstrated competency in the field, and will be supervised by the Special Programs and Projects Coordinator and MPS Art Therapy faculty.
Everything good is costly, and the development of personality is one of the most costly of all things. It is a matter of saying yes to oneself, of taking oneself as the most serious of tasks, of being conscious of everything one does, and keeping it constantly before one's eyes in all its dubious aspects - truly a task that taxes us to the utmost. (Jung, 1967)
The following is a brief overview to keep in mind when dealing with clients:
You cannot make any strides unless you get rapport. The person has to feel that unconsciously or consciously you get them. They want to feel they are seen, heard, met and understood.
Access Some Information
Find out what the problem is and prioritize it - one point at a time. Present state - desired state - help people make plans (i.e. Roommate is getting married and cannot afford apartment).
You can help them start a plan of stepping-stones to get there.
1. How much space do they need?
2. How much can they afford?
3. Can their parents help?
4. Are they being realistic about what they want?
When you are in stress you are not thinking and we are teaching skill building. A good counselor helps the client find an outcome and does not stay in the problem which can be never ending and has no place to move.
You can ask:
What would you like to have happen? (If you stay in the problem you get frozen). Have them look at outcomes, and develop a plan. We are developing creative thinking for them.
The student counselor will contact the SVA student and set up the time. Sessions are 50 minutes. Counseling will be offered Tuesdays, 10AM-6PM and Wednesdays, 4-7PM.
The student counselor will meet with Special Programs and Projects Coordinator prior to meeting the SVA student to go over information received and discuss the SVA student, art materials, and possible interventions.
The student counselor will meet with the Special Programs and Projects Coordinator to de-brief immediately after session.
Process notes will be written for each session and kept on file in the MPS Art Therapy Department.
The student counselor should be available one day a week.
