As school facilities are more often becoming the providers of mental health support for children at-risk, art therapy services in schools have effectively responded to the diverse and ever changing needs of students. In the school community, art therapy has been a proven modality to aid students to overcome social and emotional challenges, increase their self-concept, reinitiate motivation towards goal driven tasks and provide key validation for successful progress and choice making. The Art Therapy in Schools Program at NYU has been providing art therapy services in public schools since 1997. An overview of the program protocol will be examined in addition to specific benefits and limitations for art therapy practice in educational settings. Results from a two year longitudinal study that examined the impact of art therapy on self-esteem, affect regulation and impulse control will be discussed. The current proposal for launching more widespread recognition for art therapy in schools will also be shared.
